TOURS
There
are a range of day trips that you can enjoy during your time
in Lima. In addition to the tours listed below we are starting
a new day trip to Caral, the oldest city in the Americas. Please
consult us for details of our Caral trip and any of the tours
below.
COLONIAL
LIMA
The Peruvian Viceroyalty was the most important one in the Spanish
Empire and Lima was its capital. The highlights of Lima¢s
historical center are its period architecture, with many streets
filled with old colonial houses adorned with Moorish-style balconies.
The tour includes a visit to Plaza San Martin(San Martin Square)
and the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), with its different buildings
such as the Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace), Palacio
Arzobispal (the Archibishop's Palace), the Basilica Catedral
(Main Cathedral) and the Palacio Municipal (Municipal Palace).
In
the historic centre we shall visit one of its most beautiful
buildings, the Museum of the Banco Central de Reserva where
we will admire some of Perú's finest treasures, a selection
of artifacts made from gold, ceramics and textiles from different
pre-Columbian cultures. We will visit the Convento de San Francisco
which is home to the largest collection of religious art in
the Americas. We will see the Choir Room, the Monks Library
and the Sacristy with its collection paintings. The Main Cloister
is decorated with XVI century tiles from Seville and has beautiful
Moorish arches and subterranean Catacombs with plenty of old
bones.
ANCESTRAL
SHRINES
Our tour will start at the Pucllana pyramid built in the IV
century A.D., an ancestral and ceremonial site dedicated to
the local divinities. We will also enjoy a panoramic view of
the Huacllamarca shrine, an ancient pyramid which is typical
of sacred buildings along Perus coast. These shrines are
located in the modern Lima neighborhoods of San Isidro and Miraflores.
PACHACAMAC
We will have a guided tour of the vast archaeological temple
of the deity Pachacamac, believed to be the creator of the universe
and a divinity worshiped by Andean civilizations. This is a
ceremonial site where thousands of pilgrims converged to pay
tribute and consult the oracle who they believed could see into
the past, the future and predict peoples fate.
The site comprises of pyramidal temples and enclosures built
by successive pre-Colombian civilizations and finally the Incas.
Highlights include the Temple of Pachacamac, the Sun God shrine,
and the Palace of the Chosen Women or the Virgins of the Sun.
In the site museum there is an idol of the deity which was reserved
for the high priests who interpreted the messages of the divine
oracle.
