COLCA CANYON

One of the principle attractions of a visit to the Arequipa region is a trip to the second deepest Canyon in the world averaging 3400m in depth. The deepest canyon is reputedly the neighboring Cotahuasi Canyon which can also be visited but needs a little more time due to its isolated location.

The Colca Canyon can be visited in a two or three day trip from the city of Arequipa and you will stay at a beautiful lodge in a traditional Peruvian village.

Traveling rough, rutted roads through high plains flanked by extensive Inca and pre-Inca terracing that goes on for kilometres. Our first stop is Chivay, a picturesque village near the mouth of the Colca Canyon. After checking in to your lodge you will have the opportunity to walk to some ancient graveyards and later take a dip in the local hot thermal baths, watch live Andean music at a peña or go for a llama steak. Two nights gives us time to take short hikes to acclimatize to the altitude. Take a tour around the canyon, stopping in fascinating villages and at "miradors" (scenic lookouts), where with a little luck we see Andean Condors soaring over majestic the Andes mountains. Other unusual animals we may see in the Andean landscape include 3 different species of camelids: alpaca, llama and vicuña.
